Two months ago, we found out about the celebration of the International Museum Day (IMD). Little did we know that there is such an occasion, so we marked our calendars and we tried to celebrate this by going into a museum; after all, museums around the metro are waiving their entrance fees.
The International Museum Day has been organized by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) every year since 1977, around May 18. The aim of the IMD to stimulate awareness that “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.”
This year’s theme, “Museums for a Sustainable Society”, acknowledges the role of the museums in raising public awareness about the need for a society that is less wasteful, more cooperative and that uses resources in a way that respects living systems.
Even though IMD 2015 is already over, we should still continue to live up to its aim. Museums help us discover who we are, where we came from, what are the effects of human activities then and now, and so on. We must do everything we can to ensure that museums are part of the cultural driving force for the sustainable development of the world.
